IBIZAN FOLKLORE :
Pagès dance

The ball pagès is the traditional dance of Ibiza, an ancestral expression full of symbolism. It represents the courtship between man and woman through contrasting movements: energetic leaps by him and serene turns by her, accompanied by the sound of castanets.
In summer you can see it every Friday at 9 pm at the Baluarte de Sant Pere (Dalt Vila), and on Thursdays at 6 pm in the courtyard of the church of Sant Miquel. It is also common in the festivities of the patron saints of the villages and in the dances next to the rural wells.

The pig slaughter, or matança, is a tradition that is still alive in Ibiza, celebrated in the cold months. Family and friends gather to prepare sausages such as sobrasada, butifarró and carn-i-xulla.
On the same day the famous arroz de matanzas is cooked, made with fresh meat, chicken, vegetables and spices. A tasty and comforting dish that symbolizes unity and celebration.
Today, the slaughter is both a gastronomic act and a cultural festival. It is lived as a tribute to rural life, with music, typical food and gatherings that keep alive the essence of the island.

Ibicencan herbs

Ibicencan Herbs is a traditional liqueur of the island, made in an artisanal way. Local plants such as rosemary, thyme, fennel and lemon verbena are used to give it its characteristic taste.
The process begins with the maceration of the herbs in anise, which lasts several weeks. During this time, the flavors and aromas of the plants are integrated with the alcohol, creating a unique blend that represents the essence of Ibiza.
Today, each family keeps its secret recipe, and Ibicencan herbs are offered as a symbol of hospitality, especially after meals, as a digestive.

Ibicencan Frigola

The frígola ibicenca is a traditional liqueur made from the wild thyme flower, very abundant on the island. Its sweet and aromatic flavor makes it a very special drink.
It is prepared by macerating the flowers in aniseed and letting it stand for weeks to intensify its aromas. The result is a golden-colored liqueur with a unique flavor.
Today, frígola is offered as a digestive after meals and is a symbol of hospitality in Ibizan celebrations.

MARITIME TRADITION :

Varaderos

The varaderos, or varador cassettes, are small wooden constructions located on the coast of Ibiza. They served to protect traditional boats, such as llaüts, from the sun and storms.
Each fishing family had its own hut, where they also kept nets, tools and fishing utensils, essential for their daily life at sea.
Today, many dry docks are still standing, integrated into the coastal landscape and reminding us of the close relationship of the Ibicencan people with the sea.
Llauts

The Ibizan llauts are traditional boats of the island, used for centuries by fishermen for work at sea. Their design is characteristic, with a wide hull and a high stern.
Built mainly of wood, the llauts are perfectly adapted to the waters of Ibiza, being ideal both for fishing and for the transport of goods between islands.
Over the years, llauts have evolved, but their artisanal essence remains the same. They are a symbol of the island's marine life and history.

Sa nansa

Sa nansa is a traditional fishing trap from Ibiza, hand-woven with natural fibers such as esparto grass or reed. It was used to catch fish in a sustainable way.
The fishermen placed the nansas on the bottom of the sea, taking advantage of the currents to direct the fish into the sea without harming them.
Today, sa nansa is a symbol of the ingenuity and respect of the ancient Ibicencos for the sea, and is kept alive in some local festivals and exhibitions.

We hope that this journey through the traditions of Ibiza will bring you closer to the most authentic essence of the island. Each custom tells a story of roots, culture and shared life, so enjoy discovering the most genuine Ibiza and take home memories full of history and magic!
